GLULAM: Glued laminated timber, or glulam, is a highly innovative construction material. Pound for pound, glulam is stronger than steel and has greater strength and stiffness than comparably sized dimensional lumber. Increased design values, improved product performance, and cost competitiveness make glulam the superior choice for projects from simple beams and headers in residential construction to soaring arches for domed roofs spanning more than 500 feet.

Glulam is a stress-rated engineered wood beam composed of wood laminations, or “lams”, that are bonded together with durable, moisture-resistant adhesives. The grain of the laminations runs parallel with the length of the member. Glulam is versatile, ranging from simple, straight beams to complex, curved members. Glulam is available in both custom and stock sizes and one of four appearance classifications: premium, architectural, industrial, or framing.

  • Cedar:       When working with Glulams, National building codes require the use of a naturally durable species or pressure preservative treated wood in exterior applications. Alaska Yellow Cedar (AYC) and Port Orford Cedar (POC) are two such durable species. Cedar glulam products should not be used in ground or below ground contact applications, or marine environments.
  • Standard Doug Fir: Douglas fir is the exception in glulam.  Doug fir cannot be preservative treated without incising (a process that scars the beam with thousands of slit-like holes in the surface), nor is it naturally decay resistant.  Topical treatments are available, but not nearly as effective as pressure treatments.
  • Curved / Specialty:       Available in a wide variety of sizes and shapes, structural curved glulams offer architects many opportunities to creatively design buildings, while offering the benefit of the beauty and warmth of natural wood. The use of peaked and cambered beams, or tudor and radial arches, represents methods to achieve highly desirable clear spans and lofty ceiling heights in any commercial, religious, residential, or educational project.
