Here in Colorado water-based finishes are becoming more and more the norm. With that said, it is important to understand the pros and cons of water-based finishes and how to get the most out of it. Water based finishes can last longer, dry faster, and be much better for the environment, but have a little more trouble penetrating the wood than oil-based finishes, so it is important to give the finish something to grab on to. Therefore, adding some texture to the surface of the wood can help increase the performance of the finish.
As long as water-based stains are applied correctly, and on an optimum surface, they can last longer, retain their color better, and resist harsh UV rays. Since water-based stains are more breathable than oil based, water retention is not as big of a concern which will help reduce the chances of mold and mildew forming. Another great benefit is that water-based stains are more environmentally friendly then it’s oil-based counterpart and an added bonus is that harmful solvents are not need for application or cleanup.
